Under a more liberalised civil aviation policy between India and Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Airlines will operate a weekly flight to Coimbatore and Pune.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries on cooperation in civil aviation, originally signed in 2002, was renewed here at the end of two-day talks.
As per the new MoU, the Sri Lanka Airlines will operate an additional daily flight to Mumbai. Besides, the national carrier will be allowed to operate an additional daily flight to Bangalore from April 2008 once the new airport in the metro city is operational.
At present the Sri Lankan Airlines is allowed to operate on a daily basis to six Indian metropolises. In addition, India has permitted the carrier to make any number of trips to 18 designated tourist destinations. As a special case, the airline is given the facility to operate 15 flights to Chennai on a weekly basis.
As a carrier, which operates 36 flights to India in a week, Sri Lanka Airlines is the single largest foreign airline. In the next two weeks the Airlines is scheduled to start two weekly flights to Goa.
In a related development, the proposed new agreement between the Lanka Indian Oil Corporation (LIOC) and the Government of Sri Lanka has been delayed. Sarthak Behuria, Chairman, LIOC, and Chairman, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), told a news conference here that the delay was due to technical reasons and he was hopeful that the pact would be concluded soon.

Talking about business plans of LIOC, Mr. Behuria said the lube oil blending plant at Trincomalee with an annual capacity of 18 million litres and an investment of $5 million would be completed by June next year.

Ring roads in coimbatore by DLF
Real estate developer DLF is investing Rs 10,000 crore in Tamil Nadu. The projects include a six-million sq ft IT park coming up over a 42-acre plot in Chennai, a shopping mall in the heart of the city and a residential township spread over 100 acres on the IT Corridor (OMR).
In addition, DLF has offered to participate in infrastructure projects to be initiated in the state by the government. The offer includes participating in creating infrastructure facilities in Chennai airport, besides developing ring-roads around Tier-II cities like Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchi. Rajeev Singh, vice-chairman, DLF, called on Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday morning.

Coimbatore police makes elaborate security arrangements
The city and Coimbatore Rural District Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the first phase of local body elections to be held on Friday.
A press release from the City Police said that 72 wards in the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation; Kurichi and Kuniamuthur Grade III municipalities; Saravanampatty, Chinnavedampatty and Kalapatty town panchayats were going to polls in the first phase.
To thwart any poll-related trouble, the city police have formed 11 zonal parties each headed by an Inspector who would be provided with a wireless-fitted vehicle and 10 police constables. Each Zonal Inspector would monitor the movement of three to eight patrol teams. 60 patrol mobile teams were being formed in the city to maintain vigil in and around the polling stations. Each mobile party would be covering 70 to 90 polling stations and each officer would be equipped with a wireless talkie to mobilise additional reinforcements in the event of trouble.
Not a single building housing a polling station would be left without police cover. 127 sensitive polling booths would have Tamil Nadu Special Police security cover and 15 hypersensitive polling stations would be videographed throughout. About 850 NSS volunteers (including 16 girl students of Jeyendra Saraswathy College and GRD College) from different colleges in the city were being roped in. A total of 1,500 policemen would be exclusively on poll-related security duty, including those from the Tamil Nadu Special Police and Armed Reserve.
Police personnel from the neighbouring Kerala have arrived in large numbers and would be kept in a state of readiness for ensuring swift reaction. In the event of trouble, the public could contact the following numbers: Election Control Room - 2301782, City Police Control Room - 2300970 and Intelligence Section - 2301737.
Similarly, the Rural Police have made elaborate arrangements in Pollachi and Mettuppalayam Municipalities going to polls in the first phase in addition to eight panchayat unions such as Annur, Gudimangalam, Karamadai, Kinathukkadavu, Periyanaickenpalayam, Pollachi (North), Sarkarsamakulam and Thondamuthur. In rural areas, 25 town panchayats and three grade-III municipalities such as Kavundampalayam, Kuniamuthur and Kurichi are going to polls.

The All India Entrance Examination for admission to VI and IX standards of Sainik School, Amaravathinagar for the academic year 2007-08 will be held on January 7.

Paramount to operate more services
With the arrival of the fourth Embraer jet with dual seating configuration, the coimbatore-based Paramount Airways will increase its operations out of the Kamaraj domestic terminal to 36 daily services from 28."The enhancement of services will be from October 20 coinciding with Deepavali. The new aircraft offers 11 first-class and 64 business-class seats," M. Thiagarajan, Managing Director, Paramount Airways, told The Hindu on Tuesday.
The new services would include an early morning Chennai-Kochi flight and two flights between Chennai and Coimbatore — one will depart at 10.50 a.m. and the other at midday. The timings of the evening connection to Coimbatore would be altered to suit the convenience of passengers.
At a meeting with Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel in Delhi recently, Mr. Thiagarajan said the promoters of approved private carriers met in Delhi and agreed to form an association.

Chennai - Coimbatore Special trains for Diwali
The Southern Railway will run special trains between Chennai and Nagercoil, Tuticorin, Madurai and Coimbatore to clear extra rush of passengers in connection with Deepavali/Ramzan festivals.
Chennai Central - Coimbatore superfast specials: Train no. 0627 will leave Chennai Central at 22.20 hours on October 19 and 23 and arrive at Coimbatore at 07.15 hours the next day. In the return direction train no. 0628 will leave Coimbatore at 23.45 hours on October 22 and 24 and arrive at Central at 08.00 hours the next day.
The trains will stop at Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Salem, Erode and Tiruppur. Train no. 0628 will stop at Perambur also.
Advance reservation for the above train will commence on October 10, according to a Southern Railway press release.

Congress leader SRB admitted in a coimbatore hospital
Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister, S R Balasubramanian has been admitted to a private hospital here, with symptoms of chikungunya, hospital sources said.
Balasubramanian, 71, having body and joint pains since yesterday, was admitted around noon, sources in the K G Hospital, said.
After carrying out tests, the samples have been sent to Pune for analysis, the sources added.

Coimbatore IT boom and growth soon a reality?
As part of its ongoing endeavour to decongest Coimbatore City and to plan its future growth, the administration is in the final stages of drafting a Master Plan for Coimbatore City, for implementation by 2007. The previous master plan was drafted in 1994. The plan should have been reviewed once in five years. Though the survey was completed two years ago, the exercise for a draft master plan got underway only recently.
On directions from the District Collector, Neeraj Mittal, the Joint Director of Local Planning Authority, S.A. Balasubramanian, met with various associations to elicit their suggestions which will be incorporated in the Master Plan. The officials along with the Corporation Commissioner, P. Muthuveeran, inspected sites for the two proposed link roads - connecting Avanashi Road with Tiruchi Road and Mettuppalayam Road - to decongest the existing city roads. The plan included proposals for outer-ring roads and inner-ring roads (80 feet and 100 feet) to filter the out-bound traffic and to prevent the City roads from getting choked.
It also included outer ring roads from Kalapatti to Saravanampatti and another from Thudialur via Somayampalayam, Vadavalli and Veerakeralam. A consultancy firm from Chennai conducted a traffic survey for identifying the pockets that required bridges and flyovers.
The plan includes a proposal for a truck terminal near Karumathampatti besides bus terminals at a few suburbs where buses are now being parked along the roadside.
Subways have been proposed at Gandhipuram connecting the Central Bus Stand and Town Bus stand, besides one on Avanashi Road - between PSG Tech and Krishnammal College - and one on Oppanakkara Street. Funds may not be a constraint since town and country planning can fund road projects in addition to the resources from Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme for other infrastructure projects. Under the Master Plan 24 per cent of the land is to be classified for industrial purpose (enhanced following industry feedback), 33.5 per cent for residential purpose and 0.9 per cent for commercial purpose.

More capacity for TN telecom circle
With BSNL deciding to provide mobile connections to all villages having populations of more than 1,000, the Tamil Nadu telecom circle would get an additional capacity of 42 lakh connections, under Phase Five, a senior official said.
Tenders for the Phase V project has already been floated and the Coimbatore SSA would get nearly 4.5 lakh mobile connections, which would be implemented in three sub-phases, Shahjahan, General Manager and in-charge-PGM, Coimbatore telecom, told reporters here.
As the mobile connections were being provided on demand at present, Tamil Nadu circle has more than 20 lakh connections, he said.
Coimbatore telecom has at present 214 cell towers, Shahjahan said, adding, work was in progress to commission another eight towers and an additional 26 towers have been allotted to further improve the coverage along NH 47.
Mini exchanges would be installed in peripheral areas to reduce the loop length in order to provide broadband connections, he said

Castrol sets up new bike service centre in Coimbatore
Automotive lubricant manufacturer Castrol India (CIL) has opened a multi-brand motorcycle service centre styled Castrol BikeZone in Coimbatore, reports Business Line.
The company hopes to increase the coverage to 15 cities by the end of 2006, from current 37 Castrol BikeZones set up in eight cities in the country, including three in Tamil Nadu (Chennai, Tiruchi and Coimbatore).
Parinjay, Business Head, Castrol BikeZone division, said that the opening of the service outlet was an attempt by Castrol to go beyond just lubricants in bike care.
He further informed that the three-tiered service menu also would spare the customers from any surprises at the time of billing and personalised attention and transparency in service were the core principles of the business.
