MOST OF the shopping complexes and multi-storied buildings across the city have come up without providing any parking space with scant regard for town planning rules.
This had resulted in rampant parking of vehicles along the roadside thus, encroaching the space available for free flow of traffic. The police had joined hands with the corporation and district administration in introducing a lot of reforms relating to the traffic pattern and parking of vehicles. The city motorists responded positively though there were stray incidents of public non-cooperation when the police chose to enforce the rules rigidly. But, the system had come to stay in place with public realising that they are only regulations and not enforcements.
Continuing with the drive, Collector Neeraj Mittal, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore city, Karan Singha, and Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran took stock of the problems relating to parking and traffic in shopping areas. Following this, the police identified bottlenecks resulting in chaos on the roads and introduced a new set of traffic reform banning parking of four-wheelers along the roadside especially in shopping hubs such as Dr. Nanjappa Road, Cross Cut Road, DB Road, Oppanakkara Street and Range Gowder Street. The administration identified nearest vacant lands of the Corporation in these shopping hubs and provided parking space for the motorists. This resulted in the busiest shopping hubs breathing easy for the last few days.
In addition, the regulated parking also led to easy crowd control and in keeping criminal elements at bay. The public suggested that the corporation should consider making these places into permanent parking lots.

Swiss co opens liaison office in Coimbatore
Swiss textile machinery manufacturing company SSM Scharer Schweiter Mettler AG, a global leader in yarn processing and precision winding machinery, has set up its India liaison office in Coimbatore.
The liaison office with a backup of six textile engineers will extend support service for its customers and will provide improved customer service and shortening of communication time, according to a communication from SSM's General Manager - Liaison office, Mr Arne Jaeger.
The Union Government's recent approval of 26 textile parks under the scheme of integrated textile parks (SITP) and the allocation of Rs 850 crore for establishment of infrastructure underlined the importance India puts on the textile industry, Mr Jaeger said. The Swiss company's textile division, besides the yarn processing and winding machinery under SSM, has two other manufacturing activities under Stahle Eltex, which produces the air texturising machinery and Hacoba that produces the sewing thread winders. The official launch of the Coimbatore liaison was held on Thursday.

Project to revive Noyyal gets advisory panel of experts
Siruthuli, a public initiative for conservation of water sources, has formed an advisory committee to implement a project for reviving the Noyyal here.
The nine-member committee has experts from non-governmental organisations, the Public Works Department, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) and Bharathiar University. They visited Kooduthurai, the origin of the river, on Saturday. They went along its course to study the condition of the river along with Vanita Mohan, managing trustee of Siruthuli.
Ms. Mohan told reporters that the first phase of revival, from Kooduthurai to Singanallur tank in the city (40 km), would be in two stages. The first would be up to Perur. Till this point the river was clean.
Beyond this, effluents and sewage polluted the river. Siruthuli planned to revive the entire 160-km river course up to Noyyal in Erode where it joins the Cauvery. `Noyyalukku Nooru', a fund-raising programme, had helped to mobilise Rs.60 lakh.
