Parking reforms yield results in coimbatore

MOST OF the shopping complexes and multi-storied buildings across the city have come up without providing any parking space with scant regard for town planning rules.

This had resulted in rampant parking of vehicles along the roadside thus, encroaching the space available for free flow of traffic. The police had joined hands with the corporation and district administration in introducing a lot of reforms relating to the traffic pattern and parking of vehicles. The city motorists responded positively though there were stray incidents of public non-cooperation when the police chose to enforce the rules rigidly. But, the system had come to stay in place with public realising that they are only regulations and not enforcements.

Continuing with the drive, Collector Neeraj Mittal, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore city, Karan Singha, and Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran took stock of the problems relating to parking and traffic in shopping areas. Following this, the police identified bottlenecks resulting in chaos on the roads and introduced a new set of traffic reform banning parking of four-wheelers along the roadside especially in shopping hubs such as Dr. Nanjappa Road, Cross Cut Road, DB Road, Oppanakkara Street and Range Gowder Street. The administration identified nearest vacant lands of the Corporation in these shopping hubs and provided parking space for the motorists. This resulted in the busiest shopping hubs breathing easy for the last few days.

In addition, the regulated parking also led to easy crowd control and in keeping criminal elements at bay. The public suggested that the corporation should consider making these places into permanent parking lots.
