Heavy rain in Coimbatore

Coimbatore and surrounding areas experienced heavy rains last night resulting in water entering nearly 150 houses in low-lying areas at various places and throwing normal life out of gear.

The residents were taken to safer places and provided with food and other articles, official sources said.

Meanwhile, state Rural Industries Minister, Pongalur N Palanisamy, accompanied by district collector Neeraj Mittal, Corporation Commissioner Muthuveeran and other senior officials, visited rain-affected areas in the city.

Palanisamy instructed Corporation officials to provide necessary relief materials to the affected residents of at least seven areas which bore the brunt of non-stop rain from 11 p.m. last night to early today, the sources said.

He also assured the people that steps would be taken to clean up the clogged drains and ditches, on a war-footing.

Power supply was disrupted in the night, particularly in areas like R S Puram, as tree branches fell on electric wires, EB sources said.
