Though the government has declared a holiday for Ugadi on Monday, not all the Telugu speaking population celebrated the occasion in the textile city on Monday.
“Due to the solar eclipse, which lasted till 7.30 a.m. on Monday, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam had informed us a few days ago that Ugadi should be celebrated only on March 20 (Tuesday) as it is inauspicious to celebrate during solar eclipse,” said K Krishna Gopal, vice president of Coimbatore Telugu Samithi.
Several people in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu celebrated Ugadi on Monday. But, the samithi, which has 300 families as members, would celebrate it only on Tuesday, he added.
“Though more than 50 percent of the population in Coimbatore are Telugu speaking, we have enrolled as members only those who have roots in Andhra Pradesh and who know how to read and write Telugu,” he said.
The samithi has planned a grand celebration on Tuesday, in which president of World Telugu Federation Indira Dutt would participate.
A dance performance by a troupe of 40 dancers from the dance college run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam and a two-day handicrafts exhibition would form part of the celebrations.
