After the previous expansion in 1981, the Coimbatore Corporation seems to be thinking of stretching its boundaries further to bring the peripheral areas under its control.
The aim is to provide these areas with better services in view of the projected growth, to be spurred by an information technology park. The present increase of housing colonies in the suburbs has also set the Corporation mulling an expansion.
"Maybe, such an expansion will help in the creation of the much-demanded Coimbatore Metropolitan Development Authority," says the Corporation Commissioner, P. Muthuveeran. "An authority of such stature will require a large city area." It is now 105.6 sq.km. with a population of 13 lakhs.
But the plan is at a very preliminary stage, Mr Muthuveeran says. Views of stakeholders ( people in the peripheral areas), experts in town planning and also the industrial associations will have to be obtained before venturing into it.
Planners in the Corporation appear to be contemplating an expansion because residents in the suburbs such as Kurichi, Kuniamuthur, Kavundampalayam, Vadavalli, Chinniampalayam and Kalapatti identify themselves more with the city.
Given the hectic growth in these areas, the Corporation feels it may be able to serve them better with its greater financial strength. With huge funds coming from the Union Urban Development Ministry for infrastructure schemes in big cities, Coimbatore city and its outlying areas will only benefit from an expansion. Property tax, water charges and other non-tax revenue contribute revenue to local bodies that in turn can be used for development activities. But such resources are not enough to meet big infrastructure needs of these areas that almost match the city in the pace of growth. The Coimbatore Airport is located on the city border but under the control of a panchayat. Even garbage clearance is poor on the approach road to the airport. "If it is under the Corporation, there can be greater focus on maintenance," says Mr. Muthuveeran.
The fresh plan seems to have arisen out of a need for the maintenance of every infrastructure by one agency, even in the fringes whose boundaries with the city are becoming blurred.

Airtel launches Fixed Wireless Phone in Coimbatore
Telecom major Bharti Airtel today launched its Fixed Wireless Phone (FWP) services in Coimbatore.
With the launch of 'Airtel Mega' FWP services, the company completed its telecom services portfolio for all segments of the market and fulfilled the needs of customers for an innovative home phone service, P Swaminathan, Chief Executive Officer, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Mobility, Tamil Nadu, told reporters here.
Operated on the GSM network, the service is available in attractive Postpaid and Prepaid tariff plans and would be rolled out progressively across the length and breadth of Airtel's wireless network, spanning virtually the entire urban landscape plus over 10,000 villages in Tamil Nadu, he said.

Pumps, nameplates, stickers with forged ISI marks seized in Coimbatore
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) today seized large number of pumps, nameplates and stickers with forged ISI marks, during a raid conducted at an industry premises in the city.
After receiving information, BIS officials carried out search and seizure operation at a manufacturing unit in Elango Nagar in Avarampalayam near here and seized some ISI marked self priming pumps, nameplates and stickers.
Legal action would be initiated against the manufacturer for misuse of BIS standard mark (ISI) as per the provisions of the BIS Act, 1986 and the offence is punishable by imprisonment upto one year or fine upto Rs.50,000 or both, P Radhakrishna, Scientist and Head, BIS, said here in a release.
Radhakrishna also requested the public to bring any case of misuse of ISI mark to the department for immediate action.

GoAir to operate Kochi-Coimbatore flight
Budget airline GoAir will add five more sectors with eight new flights next month to expand its fleet by 33 per cent as it revamps its operations in the fast growing domestic aviation market.
The new sectors are Goa-Delhi, Pune-Delhi, Mumbai- Chennai, Mumbai-Hyderabad and Kochi-Coimbatore, the airline promoted by the Wadia group said here today.
The new flights will begin from August 22, it said.
"This is part of our strategy to consolidate on key routes within our current network. These routes will provide convenient service to business and leisure travellers alike," GoAir Managing Director Jeh Wadia said.
With the launch of the new routes, GoAir will operate 32 daily flights across 13 destinations.
The airline has also announced 50,000 tickets at special fares starting from Rs 525. These tickets will be available to passengers who wish to travel between July 19 and December 16, and will be applicable to both existing and new sectors to be launched next month, the airline said.
Last week, GoAir placed an order for 10 Airbus A320s as part of its fleet augmentation programme.
The low-cost carrier currently operates a fleet of Airbus A320s, with 24 flights covering 13 cities including Jammu and Srinagar.

Maran for passport office in coimbatore
Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Minister of State for External Affairs E.Ahamed to set up passport offices in Madurai and Coimbatore.
He assured them that the State Government was willing to provide land/building for locating these new passport offices. In a letter to the Prime Minister, he said Chennai and Tiruchi offices each handle over 2.5 lakh applications.
The Western region comprising Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal and Salem districts could be covered by the Coimbatore passport office and the southern districts including Madurai, Kanyakumari, Theni, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar would come under the purview of the Madurai office, he said in his letter.

Radio City FM in coimbatore by March 2007

Music Broadcast Private Limited, which runs Radio City FM stations, has bagged licences to operate FM radio stations in 16 cities.
"All the stations would be commissioned by March next," Apruva Purohit, CEO of Radio City, said after launching the transmission of Radio City in Chennai today.
With the central government planning a big expansion of FM network, the scope for growth was very large, she said.
Radio City would start broadcast in Jaipur in a fortnight and in Coimbatore before March 2007, Purohit added.

10,000 broadband connections in BSNL Coimbatore
BSNL Coimbatore has crossed 10,000 broadband connections, as of last weekend, claimed to be a landmark in the entire Tamil Nadu telecom circle.
Setting in place broadband infrastructure in more than 60 exchange areas of the 130 exchanges in the district so far, BSNL also proposed to provide another 20,000 connections this year, covering the whole district, A S Egaya, Principal General Manager, Coimbatore Telecom, said.
Stating that a thrust has been given on broadband connectivity to rural areas, Egaya, in a press release, said that Pollachi, Anamalai, Udumalpet, Palladam, Avinashi and Mettupalayam taluk areas have been given more than 2,500 connections to improve high speed connectivity.
A special scheme has been launched for residential customers, in which they can pay a monthly amount of Rs 900, and have unlimited access at a speed of 256 Kbps, he said.
"The subscriber can be 'online always' without disconnecting and free upload and download can be done in the entire month," he said.
The corporation is geared up to deploy the infrastructure almost immediately, if the demand arose in any other pockets, Egaya added.

Water bodies in Coimbatore under threat
Coimbatore, often called the Manchester of South India, is paying a heavy price for it's rapid industrialisation. Industrial effluents are choking the water bodies in the area.
Water has even turned saline in many pockets and what is making the situation worse is that the Pollution control board is just a silent spectator.
Water resources in Coimbatore are coming under increasing threat and only a few days back residents in Poosaripalayam area, in the heart of the city, were shocked to find a foamy substance layer itself all around.
Excessive discharge of detergent mixed with sewage is believed to have triggered this off. But the pollution control board is yet to get its act together.
And it was an NGO, which finally had to step in and bring some relief to the people.
"What we did is we found it not a problematic issue. So we just opened the gutters and the water freely flowed. The panic is over," said M Ramakrishnan, Project Coordinator, Siruthuli.

Coimbatore sewage mess results in 'snowfall'
Residents in Coimbatore were in for a surprise when the air was suddenly thick with something that looked like snowflakes. Only it wasn't falling from the skies!
These white flakes were actually the foam formed from sediments of soap. It happened because residents living upstream of one tank release sewage into Coimbatore's network of 14 tanks.
Trapped remnants
Remnants of detergents got trapped in the water when water hyacinths grew over the surface and ultimately resulted in this unusual 'snowfall'.
"It comes into our homes and stays there. It's like poison and it causes respiratory problems for small children," said Lakshmi Ammal, resident.
NGOs say such complaints are exaggerated by encroachers who want the water diverted away from their homes. For now the inflow into the tank has been reduced.
"As soon as the new water arrives the foam is created because of the soap water. So if we treat the residential sewage water initially this problem may not arise," said Mylsaamy K, Manager, Siruthuli NGO.
The new DMK government has pledged Rs 168 crore for a new underground drainage system for Coimbatore, something that will ultimately prevent this unusual display of the city's sewage.
